Research Programs

Our research spans the T0 to T4 continuum, including basic research, translation to humans, translation to patients, translation to practice, and translation to the individual, within diverse populations.

The Yale Department of Surgery has a strong, 200-year history of developing surgeon scientists, and a uniquely distinguished reputation for science and innovation. Under the leadership of the Chair, Nita Ahuja, MD, MBA, the Department has over 20 researchers in all surgical disciplines. Our research mission supports the surgeon-scientist across their career trajectory, accentuating the educational experience of surgical residents and fellows, and providing dedicated research opportunities for PhD graduate students and post-doctoral trainees. Flexible track options and structured mentorship provide trainees and faculty with the time, resources, and support necessary to excel in multiple research domains.

Yale Surgery has a diversified portfolio of research spanning the T0-T4 spectrum of research including basic science with translation to humans, patients, practice, and populations. Current areas of excellence include vascular biology and stem cell biology, genetics, neuroscience, regenerative medicine, health outcomes, and diversity research. A focused effort is underway to develop precision medicine solutions in multiple surgical disciplines with application to larger populations.

The rich intellectual and material resources in the Yale School of Medicine and across Yale University provide a, multi-disciplinary environment to pursue transformative science.
